Warning! The following statistics may change your life:
The statistics will ebb and flow, but it is more and more obvious to me that the youth will follow their father's footsteps. Mothers, this does not mean your example is not valued and necessary, but I guarantee you that 90% of you reading this blog are mothers. Thank you mothers for your outstanding commitment to your faith and to raising your children with a similar faith. Your Marian example is humbling and so, so important. I could write many blogs on what I've seen mothers doing correctly. This is not one of those blogs. The church needs the fathers to rise up. We need fathers to show up to youth group, to extracurricular church events, to take an interest in our youth's spirituality. It is the father's I am desperately reaching out to.
Dads - is anything more important than getting your children to Heaven? Anything? Material wealth? Your football team's wins or losses? Your sleep schedule? Your Sunday off? Are you living a life that reflect's what Jesus really wants from you, or do you pass the Church stuff off to your wife? How's your personal relationship with Jesus, and more importantly, how would your kid describe your relationship with Jesus? Yes, describing the inner workings of our faith requires depth of emotion, which is markedly unmanly in this current society. Jesus wept openly. He shared his heart and soul to 12 other men. Jesus knew the importance of the children of our world. We have to share our faith with our kids. We have to show them that Church is more than an hour on Sundays. It's a lifestyle and it is the most important thing in our lives. We have to let them see us going to Confession. We have to pray with them. We have to allow them to make their faith a priority in their lives by having faith lives worth modeling.
Children need people to feed them. Teenagers can feed themselves. Men feed themselves and others. Are you a spiritual man - or merely a child or teenager? How are you actively shaping the faith of your child? So before you start skipping Mass or the parish picnic to watch the Cowboys kickoff - ask yourself if you want to give your child a 2% fighting chance?
Please continue to pray for a "mangelization" in our Church!
