Core team is a group of committed volunteers who dedicate time weekly to helping the youth ministry. Members of the Core Team help facilitate small group discussion during youth nights and are a strong witness of how to live our faith.
Steve Barb - "I am a teacher and a father of 4 and see the great need in offering good formation for the youth. I was eager to help with ICY because I know how much the Lord has done in my life, and I want our youth to experience an encounter with Jesus. Our youth need good leaders and examples to follow, and I want to do my best to lead them to Our Lord."
Daniela Gayton - "I am a nursing student at UT-Tyler and my faith is my number one priority. I have come to know the necessity for discipleship to pass on the faith to the coming generations and I love getting to work with Kali, the youth minister. ICY is a place where youth have the opportunity to understand discipleship and that will take their faith to the next level. Come join us at ICY!"
Ramiro Alvarez - "I am from Cordoba, Argentina. Currently I am a junior at UT-Tyler majoring in business management and an athlete on the men's soccer team. I like helping at ICY because I think that students are exposed to more challenges in middle school and high school. Being there I can have the role of "big brother,"answering their questions and guiding them through the rough but satisfactory path of holiness."
Zach Barry - "I am 23 years old, recently moved here form Nebraska, and work as a writer for multiple Catholic Ministries, including EWTN. The message of the Gospel has always been very close to my heart. And, as I got older, I felt more and more the urge to help share God's message to youth and to do what I could to lead them on the right path. Helping with ICY is a great opportunity for me to grow in my faith and help others grow in their faith as well."

Meet the Youth Minister
Hello! My name is Kali Essner and I have been here at the Cathedral in Tyler for about a year! I love getting to work with the youth in this area and have had a passion for ministry for many years. I grew up in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, the fourth of five kids. I come from a large Catholic family and attended Catholic schooling for grade school and high school. I obtained my Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Southeast Missouri State University and then went on to work for FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) as a Campus Missionary at the University of Texas at Tyler. As mentioned, I started working for the Cathedral about a year ago as the Youth Minister and I am loving it! St. John Paul II has been a patron of mine since I was a little girl, and I strive to create a ministry after his example inspired by his fervor. Our youth are in need of strong witnesses to our Catholic faith, and myself and the Core Team are eager to step-up and lead these teens to Christ and His Church!
